When the summer sun is blazing and your dog’s tongue is hanging out after a walk, it’s only natural to offer a fresh bowl of water—or two. But is there such a thing as too much water for dogs in hot weather?
The short answer is yes—dogs can drink too much water. While staying hydrated is essential, especially in the heat, excessive water intake can lead to a rare but serious condition called water intoxication.
What Is Water Intoxication in Dogs?
Water intoxication, also known as hyponatremia, happens when a dog drinks so much water that it dilutes the sodium levels in their bloodstream. Sodium is crucial for maintaining proper cell function and fluid balance. When levels drop too low, it can cause cells to swell—including those in the brain—which can lead to serious health complications.
Signs of Water Intoxication
Be on the lookout for these symptoms after your dog has consumed a large amount of water—especially if they’ve been playing in a lake, pool, or with a hose:
- Loss of coordination (stumbling, falling)
- Lethargy or confusion
- Vomiting
- Bloating
- Pale gums
- Excessive drooling
- Seizures
If you notice any of these signs, seek veterinary care immediately.
When Does It Happen?
Water intoxication is most commonly seen in:
- Water-loving dogs that swim or fetch in the water for long periods
- Dogs that play with sprinklers or hoses, biting at the stream of water
- Small or toy breeds, which are more sensitive to changes in electrolyte levels
It’s rare, but being aware is half the battle.
How to Safely Keep Your Dog Hydrated
So how much water is enough—and how much is too much?
Safe Hydration Tips:
- Monitor water intake. A general guideline is about ½ to 1 ounce of water per pound of body weight per day.
- Offer frequent, small sips rather than letting your dog gulp down an entire bowl at once.
- Avoid excessive play in water, especially if your dog is swallowing a lot.
- Use a cooling vest, shade, or dog boots to keep your pup cool without over-reliance on water.
